Introduction to Majors Offered

Our college now offers six majors for undergraduates, including Natural Geography and Resource Environment (national feature major), Human Geography and Urban and Rural Planning, Geographic Information Science, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering. Since the year of 2013, each grade has 7 classes (including Geography Base Class). The 'Geography Base Class' contains 3 different majors: 'Natural Geography and Resource Environment', 'Human Geography and Urban and Rural Planning' and 'Geographic Information Science'.

Natural Geography and Resource Environment

1. Title: Natural Geography

Course Description: This course usesNatural Geography(Wu Guanghe et al., 4th edition) as the textbook, mainly open for beginners of Natural Geography major and students of other majors in Geography department. It introduces the position and role of Natural Geography in the system of geography science, the nature and characteristics of Natural Geography, and touches the basic theories and knowledge of such sub-disciplines as Geomorphology, Climatology, Hydrogeography and Phytogeography, etc.

2. Title: Geomorphology

Course Description: The primary purpose and basic requirement of this course is to teach the undergraduates to systematically master the fundamental theory and main working methods of Geomorphology through classroom instruction and field practice. In a more detailed way, this course is designed to provide instruction that enables students to distinguish the main geomorphological types in the field, as well as the formation causes and distribution laws thereof. and to master the basic principle of judging the environmental evolution through geomorphology.

Human Geography and Urban and Rural Planning

Course Description: This course is designed to shed light on the task, object, disciplinary system, basic theory, methodology and research paradigm of human geography, and to familiarize students with the status quo, development trend, and main content of the sub-disciplines of human geography. It aims to promote students’ ability in studying the objective human elements guided by the principle of human geography, and in analyzing the relationship between the emergence, development, change of human activities and geographical environment with the theory of human geography.

4. Title: Urban Planning Principle

Course Description: This is a compulsory theoretic course following the Introduction of Urban Planning and other professional theoretic courses, one characterized by its width and breadth. The purpose is to help students understand and master the theory and method of urban planning through the impartment of systematic knowledge and theory, and establish a correct and comprehensive concept of city. It also aims to help students lay a scientific theoretic foundation for overall urban planning, urban design, human settlement design and urban planning design.

Geographic Information Science

5. Title: Cartography

Course Description: This course is a public basic course for geography majors. The course introduces students the basic principles and application methods of mathematical cartography, cartographic generalization and cartographic symbol, the representation method of thematic cartographic content, remote sensing cartography, digital cartography and application method of cartography. It will lay a foundation for the subsequent courses such as GIS Principles and Applications, Remote Sensing Introduction, Remote Sensing Digital Image Processing, Global Positioning System and so on.

6. Title: Introduction to Geographic Information System

Course Description: This course requires students to learn a lot about GIS, including basic concepts, basic theories, spatial data features, data structure, spatial database, spatial data processing, spatial analysis, application model, application design, product output, etc. It is expected to help students comprehend the basic theories and methodologies of GIS, realize its main application fields and future direction, and lay a theoretical and technical foundation for their future involvement in career related to application, development and research of GIS. The course aims to strengthen students' ability to solve practical problems and conduct scientific researches.

Environmental Science

7. Title: Principle and Method of Soil Pollution Control

Course Description: The course Principle and Method of Soil Pollution Control,offeredin the first semester of grade three, is an important specialized course in Environmental Science major. It covers the present situation and evolution of the soil environment, the reaction behavior of pollutants in the soil environment system, the relationship between soil quality and water quality, atmosphere, biological quality and human health, and the remediation of contaminated soil, etc.

8. Title: Principle, Method and Experiment of Pollution Ecological Control

Course Description: This course is designed to help students master the basic knowledge, concepts, principles and major issues of pollution ecology, get familiar with pollution ecological process, pollution ecological effect and its evaluation, pollution ecological diagnosis, detection and analysis. Students are also required to learn terrestrial, water and air pollution ecology, urban and agro-ecosystem pollution ecology, microbial pollution ecology, ecosystem pollution control and pollution ecological engineering, innovatory technology of local remediation of contaminated land and integrated ecosystem prevention and control planning, etc.

Environmental Engineering

9. Title: Engineering Fluid Mechanics and Experiment

Course Description: This course is designed to provide instruction for students to grasp the basic laws of fluid balance and flow in various industrial units, to understand the velocity distribution , pressure distribution, energy loss and interaction between the fluid and the solid when the fluid steers by objects or flows through a channel. It aims at providing a solid theoretical basis for students to be engaged in related research, engineering application and practical operation in the future and enhancing their ability in analyzing and solving practical problems.

10. Title: Water pollution Control Engineering and Experiment

Course Description: This course requires students to learn the fundamental theoretical knowledge, working principles and design calculation of various effluent treatment methods, such as physical treatment, biochemical treatment and physical and chemical treatment, with the purpose to help students grasp the concepts, basic principles and main design calculations of the three major methods of effluent treatment. It also aims to remind them to attach importance to the practice and innovation of environmental engineering design, and to boost their ability to analyze and solve practical problems.

Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering

11. Title: Groundwater Dynamics

Course Description: The course Groundwater Dynamics primarily deals with the basic concepts, laws, equations and mathematical modelling and solution of groundwater movement. The basic concepts, laws, equations and mathematical modelling and solution of groundwater movement in porous media are mainly taught in various teaching forms, such as giving lectures, doing exercise, numerical experimentation, etc. This course also gives a systematic introduction to the movement of groundwater to the channel, the basic laws, characteristics, calculating formula and applicable condition of the steady and unsteady the movement of groundwater to the fully penetrating well, the partially penetrating well and the boundary well. In addition, it involves issues like methods of determining hydrogeological parameters under different conditions, groundwater movement in unsaturated zone, theory of hydrodynamic dispersion, etc.

12. Title: Hydrological and Hydraulic Calculation

Course Description: This course is a professional and major one that comprises hydrological analytical calculation and hydraulic calculation. It sheds light on both the theory and technical methods of engineering hydrological design, the principle and method of runoff and flood regulation calculation and hydroenergy calculation. The knowledge gained can be applied to tackle the engineering design problems during the planning, constructing and managing stage of hydraulic and hydropower projects, as well as to issues related to water resource planning and management of reservoir operation.
