Release time:2020-08-15 20:58:09

Recently, the International Subcommission on Timescale Calibration (ISTC) was established by the International Union of Geological Sciences(IUGS)and International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS). 33 outstanding scientists from 10 different countries were selected as voting members of ISTC. Due to his advantage in the field of Paleomagnetism and Environmental Magnetism, Professor Nie Junsheng from the College of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Lanzhou University, was selected as one of the voting members. It was reported that there are totally three Chinese voting members and the other two members are Professor Cheng Hai from Xi’an Jiaotong University and Professor Fan Juanxuan from Nanjing University.

Dedicated to establishing a more accurate scale of Chronostratigraphy, ISTC was approved to set up by IUGS and ICS in February 2020. An accurate chronology scale is very important to the interpretation of the co-evolution of the earth and life and it is also a bridge for us to understand important geological events and the corresponding driving mechanisms in geological history. However, deciphering time information from stratigraphic records is a complex task and it requires the support of multiple technologies. It is the future to solve the problem of accuracy through the comprehensive application of different methods.
