Academician Zhang Bing Discusses the Disciplinary System of Remote Sensing Science and Technology and Its Integrated Development with Artificial Intelligence

On the afternoon of August 24, at the invitation of the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Lanzhou University, Academician Zhang Bing, Researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, attended the "Centennial Lanzhou University Distinguished Lecture Series" and delivered a special academic lecture entitled "The Disciplinary System of Remote Sensing Science and Technology and Its Integrated Development with Artificial Intelligence". The lecture was moderated by Professor Li Yu, Dean of the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences. Faculty members and students from related disciplines such as information geography at Lanzhou University, as well as some off-campus experts, attended the lecture.

Academician Zhang Bing is Secretary of the Party Committee of the Aerospace Information Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a Fellow of the Geographical Society of China, and a Fellow of the China National Committee of the International Society for Digital Earth. He also serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Remote Sensing, among other academic positions. He has long been engaged in research on hyperspectral remote sensing and remote sensing big data, and has promoted the integration of new artificial intelligence paradigms into the field of Earth observation science and applications. He has received the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and many other important national, provincial, and ministerial science and technology awards.

In his lecture, Academician Zhang Bing systematically reviewed the development trajectory and complete disciplinary system of remote sensing science and technology in China, and provided an in-depth explanation of the fundamental theories and key technologies of Earth observation. He focused on analyzing frontier directions in the interdisciplinary integration of artificial intelligence technologies and remote sensing science, and explained how artificial intelligence paradigms can be used to break through bottlenecks in remote sensing technology and promote collaborative innovation among remote sensing science and technology, Earth system science, and aerospace information engineering. In light of major national application needs, Academician Zhang Bing shared practical pathways for translating theoretical achievements into applications, and elaborated on the supporting role of remote sensing technology research and development, discipline construction, and domestic and international academic exchange in advancing China's remote sensing endeavors.

During the interactive session, participants from both within and outside the university actively raised questions on topics such as hyperspectral remote sensing, remote sensing big data, and interdisciplinary research on artificial intelligence and remote sensing. Academician Zhang Bing answered each question in detail, sharing his scientific insights based on his research practice, which provided much inspiration for young researchers and graduate students in attendance. In his concluding remarks, Dean Li Yu expressed gratitude to Academician Zhang Bing for the excellent lecture. He noted that the lecture combined theoretical depth with practical orientation, providing important guidance for faculty and students of the school as well as visiting experts from other institutions in grasping the frontiers of remote sensing and conducting interdisciplinary innovative research. He encouraged students to build on their disciplinary directions, keep a close eye on scientific frontiers, and boldly explore new areas of interdisciplinary research.

Focusing on the frontier interdisciplinary field of remote sensing and artificial intelligence, this lecture broadened the academic horizons of the participants and established a good platform for inter-university academic exchange. It played a positive role in promoting the discipline construction and talent cultivation of information geography in the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
