Title: My European Study Tour

Reporter Profile:
Xia Huan is a Professor at the College of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Lanzhou University. She was jointly trained at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany and the University of Copenhagen in Denmark (2020.11-2022.08). Her primary research focuses on Paleolithic environmental archaeology on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. By introducing, optimizing, and developing emerging ancient protein methods, she achieved a series of breakthrough understandings in the study of prehistoric human activity history and survival strategies. She discovered Denisovan fossils dating back 42000 years ago, providing the latest record of Denisovan survival and offering the first empirical evidence of the spatio-temporal overlap between Denisovans and early modern humans in East Asia. Furthermore, she discovered the survival strategies of Denisovans on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, who utilized a broad spectrum of animal resources, and first revealed their adaptive strategies in the diverse and changing environments of eastern Eurasia during the late Middle to Late Pleistocene. As a primary author, she has published over 20 papers in leading journals such as Nature, Science, and Chinese Science Bulletin. Her research achievements have been recognized with awards such as the "Top Ten Advances in China's Geographical Science Research" in 2024 by the Geographical Society of China (as the primary contributor) and the "Top Ten Sci-tech Progress of Chinese Higher Education Institutions" in 2019 by the Ministry of Education (as the third contributor). She also serves as a Youth Editorial Board Member for Earth and Environmental Sciences for Chinese Science Bulletin & Science Bulletin and is a committee member of the Paleolithic Archaeology Committee of the Chinese Archaeological Society.

Title: Sharing My Two Study Experiences at Harvard University

Reporter Profile:
Zhang Junzhou is a professor and doctoral supervisor at the College of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Lanzhou University. His research interests focus on global environmental change and ecological responses, with particular emphasis on the growth dynamics of trees in cold and arid regions and the interaction between water-carbon supply relationships and climate factors. Professor Zhang is responsible for the construction, observation, and management of the Liancheng Field Station. In recent years, his research has clarified the growth dynamics of major conifer species in the Qilian Mountains and their physiological responses to climate factors. He has also explored the relationship between tree radial changes and trunk sap flow, providing insights into the climatic factors that limit tree water physiology over different time scales. Based on forest inventory data and area-based plot surveys, he clarified the dynamics of carbon density variation in Picea crassifolia (Qinghai spruce) forests in the Qilian Mountains, as well as the key influencing factors. Professor Zhang has successively led several research projects, including a General Program and a Young Scientists Fund Program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), a China Postdoctoral Science Foundation (CPSF) project, and a sub-project under the Special Fund for Guiding Local Science and Technology Development. He has also participated as a key researcher in NSFC Joint Fund projects and the National Key R&D Program. Over the past five years, his total research funding has reached 3.05 million CNY. He has published 26 papers in prestigious journals such as Agricultural and Forest Meteorology, Catena, Tree Physiology, Journal of Hydrology, and Acta Ecologica Sinica. He has received numerous awards for his contributions to scientific research, including the "Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award" from both Lanzhou University and Gansu Province. Professor Zhang has visited Harvard University twice for academic exchanges and has established long-term collaborative relationships with prestigious institutions such as Harvard University, Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (Eidgenössische Forschungsanstalt für Wald, Schnee und Landschaft, WSL), and University of Vermont.
