Lei Yu is an Associate Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He received his Ph.D. from Sun Yat-sen University in 2022 and conducted postdoctoral research at the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, from 2022 to 2024. His research mainly focuses on the application of transient spectroscopic techniques in drinking water chemical risk control and environmental radical analysis. He has published more than 60 SCI-indexed papers, including over 30 papers in Environmental Science & Technology and Water Research, with more than 20 publications as first or corresponding author. Several of his studies have been recognized as ESI Hot Papers, ESI Highly Cited Papers, and recipients of the Environmental Science & Technology Best Paper Award. He has led several research projects, including the Postdoctoral Innovation Talent Support Program, the National Natural Science Foundation of China Young Scientists Fund, and the Shanghai Natural Science Foundation General Program. He has received honors including the Ogano (Water Quality and Water Environment) Grand Prize and the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award of Sun Yat-sen University. He currently serves as a committee member of the International Water Association Young Water Professionals China (IWA-YWP China) and as a young editorial board member of Chinese Chemical Letters.
Report Abstract:
Advanced oxidation processes are important approaches for water purification and have been widely applied in drinking water disinfection, advanced wastewater treatment, and water reuse. However, these processes involve various short-lived reactive species (such as radicals), whose generation and transformation pathways are highly complex, making mechanistic elucidation and process regulation challenging. Transient spectroscopic techniques enable the capture of transient intermediates and the characterization of rapid reaction kinetics. Nevertheless, their further application in environmental systems is limited by spectral interference and signal attenuation caused by complex matrices in real water environments. This presentation will introduce the speaker's research progress in the development and optimization of transient spectroscopic techniques, as well as their applications in investigating the reaction kinetics of emerging contaminant transformation and the mechanisms underlying the formation of harmful disinfection byproducts. The potential future applications of these techniques in environmental science and engineering will also be discussed.
