Reporter Profile:
Xie Yang is a Professor at the School of Economics and Management, Beihang University, an Adjunct Researcher at the Institute for Global Health and Development, Peking University, and a doctoral supervisor. His research focuses on the impacts of air pollution and climate change on population health and the macroeconomy. He has presided over projects including the Young Scientists Fund Program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Category C and Category B), the General Program of NSFC, key project tasks, and tasks under the National Key R&D Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology. As first or corresponding author, he has published more than 50 papers in leading environmental and health journals, including Nature Communications, One Earth, The Lancet Regional Health, Global Environmental Change, and Environmental Science & Technology, with a total of over 11,000 Web of Science citations, an H-index of 36, and 12 ESI top 1% highly cited papers. He serves as a Field Editor for Energy, Ecology and Environment and Carbon Footprints, a specially invited review expert for Frontiers of Engineering Management (a management journal of the Chinese Academy of Engineering), a reviewer for the Global Environment Outlook-7 (GEO-7), a Youth Committee Member of the Chinese Society of Optimization, Overall Planning and Economical Mathematics, a reviewer for IPCC reports, a lead author of Synergistic Pathways for Carbon Neutrality and Clean Air in China and The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change 2020: China Report, and a Collaborator for the Global Burden of Disease study.
Report Abstract:
Climate change and air pollution are two major environmental factors threatening public health, imposing a huge social burden of disease. To improve air quality, mitigate climate change, and enhance public health, China has successively put forward major strategies such as "Beautiful China", "Healthy China", and the "dual carbon" goals. Complex interactions exist among the climate environment, public health, and economic development. How to delineate the scope of climate–environment impacts on population health and quantitatively assess the disease burden involves considerable uncertainty. Existing studies have not fully characterized health outcomes and social disease burdens, underestimating the negative socioeconomic impacts of climate and the environment. Therefore, revealing the health burden and economic costs of air pollution and climate change on the public, and quantitatively assessing the marginal costs and health benefits of pollution reduction and carbon mitigation, are urgent theoretical and practical issues in the field of policy evaluation. In response, research on the health–economic impacts of climate and environmental change and relevant policies has been carried out, providing scientific support for health-driven, integrated decision-making on pollution reduction, carbon mitigation, and green growth.
