Professor Xiao Cunde Delivers "Introduction to Cryosphere Science" Course to Undergraduates

On November 18, 2024, Professor Xiao Cunde, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Earth Surface Processes and Resource Ecology at Beijing Normal University, delivered the course"Introduction to Cryosphere Science"to our undergraduate students of the 2022 cohort at Lanzhou University, in Room B515 of Qinling Hall, Yuzhong Campus.

Professor Xiao Cunde provided a comprehensive and detailed explanation of the climate and environmental records within the cryosphere, including ice core records, lake records, tree-ring records, and other medium records from cold regions. He also introduced the latest scientific research progress on cryospheric climate and environmental records, incorporating field ice core drilling work and experimental analysis methods. He encouraged students to familiarize themselves with cutting-edge scientific topics, such as theIPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate.

Expert Profile:

Xiao Cunde, Professor at Beijing Normal University, Doctoral Supervisor, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Earth Surface Processes and Resource Ecology at Beijing Normal University, and recipient of the National Outstanding Youth Fund. He has previously served as Vice President of the International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (IACS), Council Member of the International Glaciological Society (IGS), Member of the Global Cryosphere Watch (GCW), Expert Committee Member of the World Climate Research Programme – Climate and Cryosphere (WCRP/CliC), and Review Editor of the IPCC AR5 First Working Group (RE). He currently holds several international academic positions, including Coordinating Lead Author (CLA) and Review Editor (RE) for IPCC AR6, and is also the Secretary-General of the Chinese Cryosphere Science Society and Vice President of the Chinese Association of Scientific Exploration. He has published over 200 papers and has been awarded the First-Class Scientific and Technological Innovation Award from the National Oceanic Administration, as well as titles such as National Advanced Worker and National Advanced Science and Technology Worker.
