Release time:2025-12-25 17:00:32

On October 20 and 27, 2025, Researcher Kang Shichang, Director of the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Professor at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Fellow of the Geographical Society of China, delivered lectures on Introduction to Cryospheric Science for the 2023 cohort of undergraduates from the College of Earth and Environmental Sciences in the Qinling Hall, Yuzhong Campus, Lanzhou University.

Researcher Kang Shichang outlined the disciplinary framework of cryospheric chemistry for the students. He provided a comprehensive explanation of the background knowledge concerning atmospheric composition and chemical components, the sources and processes of chemical components within the cryosphere, as well as the climatic and environmental effects of cryospheric chemistry. He delved into specific areas including glacier chemistry, permafrost chemistry, river and lake ice chemistry, and sea ice chemistry. He also emphasized the importance of field observations and experimental techniques, the application of high technologies, and the development of cryospheric models, which together facilitate integrated research in cryospheric science and promote its rapid advancement. Furthermore, he shared experiences from ice core drilling processes on Mount Everest and scientific expeditions in Antarctica, guiding the students into the world of ice and snow, encouraging them to appreciate nature and find joy in the study of the cryosphere.
