He Canfei is a Boya Distinguished Professor at Peking University. He serves as the Chairman of the Geography Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, a member of the Science and Technology Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Vice President of the Geographical Society of China (GSC), Vice Chairman of the National Institute of Economic Geography, Vice President of the Regional Science Association of China, Vice President of the China Association of Regional Economics, Vice President of the China Society of Urban Economy, and Director of the Economic Geography Professional Committee of the GSC, among others.
His research focuses on economic geography, and he has achieved a series of innovative results in industrial geography, evolutionary economic geography, and environmental economic geography. He serves as the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Geographical Sciences, Geographical Research, Geographical Science, and World Regional Studies, Co-Editor-in-Chief of Growth and Change, and International Corresponding Editor of Urban Studies. He is an editorial board member of more than 10 English journals, including Economic Geography, Progress in Economic Geography, Urban Studies, and Applied Geography. He has published over 200 papers in Chinese journals such as Acta Geographica Sinica, Economic Research Journal, Management World, and Science China, and more than 140 papers in SSCI journals including Nature Cities, Nature Climate Change, Economic Geography, and Journal of Economic Geography. He has also published a series of economic geography books, including Advanced Economic Geography and its series of graduate textbooks, as well as Industrial Geography in Contemporary China.
He has received the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and is a Changjiang Scholars Distinguished Professor of the Ministry of Education.He enjoys the Special Government Allowance from the State Council and is a Fellow of the Regional Studies Association (FeRSA).He is the Leader of a National First-Class Course and the Chief Expert of the Science and Technology Innovation Team under the High-level Scientific and Technological Innovation Talent Project of the Ministry of Natural Resources.He has also received the RSA Distinguished Service Award, the Second Prize of the 6th and 10th Excellent Scientific Research Achievement Award for Higher Education Institutions from the Ministry of Education, the Beijing Outstanding Teacher Award, the 3rd National Outstanding Geographical Science and Technology Worker Award, and the 9th National Youth Geographical Science and Technology Award. His research findings were selected as one of the Top Ten Research Advances in Chinese Geographical Sciences by the Geographical Society of China in 2021 and 2025. He has been listed as one of "Most Cited Chinese Researchers" (Social Sciences, Applied Economics) by Elsevier for several consecutive years, and has been included in Stanford University's "World's Top 2% Scientists" lists for both "Career Impact" and "Annual Impact".
